Halloween Coloring Book: Print and Bind Your Own

Finding a Halloween coloring book before the 31st is easy if you are happy to make one. A Halloween coloring book can be a set of pages you print at home, put in order and staple. The same pages also work as loose sheets.

Two routes lead to a finished book. You can print pages and bind them yourself, or you can buy a book that comes bound. Both are fine, and the right one depends on how many pages you want and how soon you need them.

Halloween coloring book: print one or buy one

A printed set is a PDF that comes by email after checkout, so you can print it the same day. A bought book arrives bound, usually with more pages than a home printer wants to handle. Here is how the two compare on the things most people weigh.

A coloring book works when the child can finish it.

Stock at stores changes from week to week, so check a store's site before you drive there.

Make a Halloween coloring book from 11 printed pages

Our Halloween Coloring Pages file has 11 pages. Page 1 is a cover and page 2 explains how to use it. Page 3 is a "My Halloween coloring book" page with a box for the child's name. Pages 4 to 11 are the eight scenes. They are The Pumpkin Porch, Trick-or-Treat Friends, The Happy Haunted House, The Cat in the Window, The Moonlight Witch, The Owl's Potion Shelf, The Pumpkin Patch and The Monster Dance Party. Each scene is as large as the page allows, about 7.4 by 9.4 inches on US Letter. The scenes are friendly, so a child of 3 or older can color them.

The simplest book prints all 11 pages in order. You can get Halloween Coloring Pages for $2.00 and print the whole file as a book. The file comes in US Letter and A4, so one download fits either paper. You do not need any other app, because the files open in any PDF reader. The name page has a type-in field you fill in a free PDF reader, and the scenes are for crayons, pencils or markers.

Children aged 3 and up can color these pages. For a young child, big open shapes are easier than fine detail, and a pumpkin porch has plenty of room for a fat crayon. Older children and adults tend to want smaller spaces, so look at a sample page before you commit to any book. Check the line weight against the pens you own.

Skip page 2 if you want a shorter stack. That leaves 10 sheets. The name page works as a title page, so you do not need to write anything on the cover.

Choose paper that holds up to crayons and markers

Paper decides how the book feels. Colorado State University's printing office describes 20 lb bond as durable and commonly used for everyday printing. It lists text-weight paper from 28 lb up as a better choice for booklets. It calls cover weight or cardstock from 65 lb up thick and stiff, ideal for covers (see Colorado State's FastPrint paper guide). More pounds means heavier paper.

For the pages, 28 lb or heavier is a good pick if your printer takes it. Use plain 20 lb paper if that is what you have. Crayons and colored pencils work on both. Markers soak through thin paper, so slide a spare sheet behind the page you color. For the cover, try 65 lb cardstock, but check your printer's manual first, since many home printers cap the paper weight they can feed.

Bind your coloring book with staples, rings or a fold

You have two ways to bind it. The first keeps the pages full size. Print 11 sheets on one side, stack them in order and staple the left edge. Or punch two or three holes and use binder rings or string. The scenes leave about half an inch of white at the left, so punch just inside the edge and test one page first.

The second way makes a small folded booklet. Folding a Letter sheet in half gives pages that are 5.5 by 8.5 inches. Microsoft's guide to booklets in Word explains the idea. Its Book Fold layout puts pages in the right order for folding and binding, and the finished booklet is half the width of the paper. Look for a Booklet option in your PDF reader's print window.

A folded booklet needs a page count that is a multiple of four. The 11 pages plus one blank page at the end make 12, which is three sheets of paper. When the pages shrink to fit half a sheet, a scene drops from about 7.4 by 9.4 inches to about 4.8 by 6.1. That is roughly two thirds of its size. Smaller pages mean tighter spaces, so a folded booklet suits crayons and pencils better than fat markers.

If your printer does not print on both sides on its own, print both sides manually. Microsoft says to flip the sheets on the short edge. Print one sheet first to check the order.

What coloring can and cannot do for attention

Many people ask whether coloring helps with ADHD. The honest answer is that it may help, and the research is small. A 2023 study in the journal Cureus followed 120 children aged 6 to 10 with ADHD symptoms. The group who did mandala coloring for 10 weeks scored better on focused attention and working memory, though it did not improve emotional and motivational self-regulation.

The authors list a small sample, children who were not randomly assigned and no long-term follow-up as limits. Mandalas are also different from the scene pages in a Halloween book. Treat coloring as a calm activity you can enjoy together, and ask your doctor about anything that needs treatment.

When a bound book is the better buy

A home-printed book has eight scenes. For one afternoon, many children color three or four big scenes before they want a break, so eight pages can last a few sittings. A child who colors one a day finishes it in eight days. If you want fifty different pages, a thick spine or a gift-ready look, buy a bound book. It also makes sense if you have no printer, or if your printer eats ink on every page.

Free coloring pages exist, and they can be good enough for one afternoon. What the paid file adds is eight scenes drawn as a matching set, both paper sizes, a name page with a type-in field and nothing to redraw.

A coloring book also does more than fill a quiet hour. Put one scene at each place at a party table. Hand a name-page booklet to each child as a take-home. Tape finished scenes to a wall or door as decorations, so the party room is partly made by the guests.

If you want a quick Halloween book for one child or a whole table of them, print the pages again. The Halloween Coloring Pages file has a name page, so each child can claim a copy as their own.

FAQ

Are coloring books good for ADHD?

They may help some children, but the evidence is thin. One 2023 study of 120 children aged 6 to 10 with ADHD symptoms found better focus after 10 weeks of mandala coloring, in a small study without random assignment. It is not a treatment, so talk to your doctor about care.

What is the best horror coloring book?

No single book is best for everyone, so check a sample page for line weight and look for single-sided pages. Our Halloween Coloring Pages are friendly, not scary. For darker, more detailed art, try our adult set with plates like The Raven at Midnight and Skull in Bloom.

Conclusion

A coloring book is a pile of pages with a cover and a way to hold them together. Print the 11 pages, add one blank to make 12, and fold three sheets into a booklet, or staple the full-size sheets at the left edge. Pick paper that suits the pens in your house. If your child wants fifty pages, buy a bound book too.
